Ishmael Beah is a former child soldier who was forced to fight in Sierra Leone’s vicious civil war. He is the
author of the memoir, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier.
Lieutenant-General (Ret) Romeo Dallaire was the U.N. Force Commander for the peace-keeping mission in
Rwanda. In 1994, his pleas to the U.N. for assistance to stop the genocide went unheeded as 800,000 Tutsis
were slaughtered in a mere 100 days. He is the author of the book, Shake Hands With The Devil, which
recounts his experience in Rwanda. Dallaire was appointed to the Canadian senate in 2005.
Palden Gyatso is a Tibetan Buddhist monk. When China invaded Tibet in 1950, he was arrested for protesting
and not released until 1992. He spent a total of 33 years in Chinese prisons and labour camps where he was
brutally tortured.
